Bourgogne Blanc 'Les Champs L'Huillier' Jean Charles Fagot, Burgundy, France 2022
According to Wikipedia, a ‘benchmark’ is a chiselled horizontal mark that surveyors make in stone structures, into which an angle-iron may be placed to form a ‘bench’ for a levelling rod, thus ensuring that a levelling rod can be accurately repositioned in the same place in the future. Wrong! So wrong! It’s this classic Bourgogne Blanc from Jean Charles Fagot. It has a gorgeous bouquet which is bright, fresh and rich, where notes of brioche, crème fraiche, lime marmalade and toast frame the core of lemon, grapefruit jelly, lime peel, with a hint of jalapeno for good measure. The palate is ripe with flesh to its bones and perks up your taste buds with its zingy fruit before massaging them gently with the oak flavours. Its real magic, the thrill, however, is in its proportions, its balance, its polished acidity and its finesse. It’s delicious! When you need a lovely white Burgundy that is quite special, but doesn’t break the bank, then this fits the bill perfectly. Try it with Dover sole in caper butter sauce, some whitebait with tartare sauce, seared scallops with pea puree or, golly gosh, roast chicken! 13% alc. Drink now – 2026.
The Burgundy Report: "A more direct and steely aromatic. More fluid flavour too – framed by grainless tannin – that has super intensity – simply excellent Bourgogne and for the prices here a great wine! Love that finish."
