David and Nadia Chenin Blanc, Swartland, South Africa 2022
"Different soils, different aspects, different vineyard ages, farmed by different people. This wine illustrates the Swartland, its people and its old vineyards." - David and Nadia Sadie
A remarkable price for a heritage old vine Swartland Chenin Blanc of this quality (keep it under your hat, but we picked up a parcel at a discount and we always pass such savings on to you). Wisps of smoky reduction swirl amid apple compote, grapefruit, nutmeg and beeswax, like a Savennieres with a rebellious streak. It's a shapeshifter, at once crisp and mineral, then toothsome and creamy, before morphing one last time into stone-cold and mineral. 12.5% alc. Registered with the Old Vine Project. Drink now-2030.
Press reviews:
Tim Atkin MW: "Granite-based with other components on shale, clay and limestone, it's a nuanced, effortlessly balanced white with notes of aniseed, oatmeal, wet stone and pithy citrus and yellow apple fruit. Drink now-2029." 94 points
The Wine Advocate: "It displays a refined nose with notions of apple and citrus blossom and white peach and wax melon. Medium-bodied and with a fine mineral tension, the palate displays a kiss of phenolic bitterness before revealing layers of complexity. It ends with a refined, fresh, ethereal finish. Enjoy with food. Drink now-2035." 92 points
JancisRobinson.com: "A peppy, confident wine. Grippy, crunchy and spicy. So very succulent but not in a fruity juicy kind of way – it's something to do with the confluence of ripe acidity, rapier minerality; stones and sweet citrus; roundness and the overlay of angles. The wine floods the mouth, filling the spaces, glittering with life. (TC). Drink now-2032." 17 points
Vinous: "The 2022 Chenin Blanc comes from 8 vineyards in granite soils, plantings from 1968 to 1986, matured 20% in concrete and the remainder in neutral oak, Lemon thyme, orange zest and light waxy scents blossom on the nose - quite intense and well-delineated, almost feisty in style. The palate is taut and fresh, more saline than the Aristargos, with a linear, slightly more malic finish than usual. Plenty of freshness, but I would cellar this for 3-5 years before broaching. Very fine. Drink now-2034." 91 points
James Suckling: "This is showing aromas of apricot stones, almonds, cardamom and lemon pith. It’s medium-bodied with plenty of phenolic texture, with a fresh, mineral and almost chalky finish." 93 points
