VikeVike Cannonau di Sardegna ‘Ghirada Gurguruo’, Sadinia, Italy 2020

£59.00

“That is the best bottle of red wine I have ever had.” - My friend, Simon, who doesn’t drink red wine.

A little-known Cannonau from Sardinia with no reviews and no scores, which retails for £59.00 a bottle. It practically sells itself! But if you insist on knowing more, then your intrigue should be rewarded. It’s a pale and haunting Grenache (known in Sardinia as ‘Cannonau’), and tastes how I imagine the most iconic Grenache in the world, Chateau Rayas, would taste. I say ‘imagine’, because I’ve never tasted that mythical wine, but it has been so well-described by others that I feel like I have. My imaginary Chateau Rayas would be fairly light in colour, with imperceptible tannins and a haunting perfume of red berries, warm leather, orange peel and brick dust. My imaginary Chateau Rayas would be wonderfully appetising thanks to its delicacy, whilst being paradoxically rich in terms of depth of flavour and my imaginary Chateau Rayas would show enough complexity to encourage discussion among friends and have the ability to age for decades, but if one day I taste the real thing and it doesn’t, I’ll have this fabulous doppelganger from Sardinia to fall back on. 13.5% alc. 18 months in oak. 50% whole bunch fermentation. 30 year-old vines. Drink now-2045.
