Soumah 'Hexham' Nebbiolo, Yarra Valley, Australia 2020
Nebbiolo, when it’s allowed to express itself, provides wine lovers with some of the most beguiling aromas and flavours of any grape variety, but it can be its own worst enemy, especially in its native Piedmont, where, in a cruel twist of nature, its naturally high acidity and firm tannins can often repress the wine’s inner beauty, but we’ve found that Nebbiolo from Australia has a less restrictive structure (remember Alpha Box & Dice’s ‘Fog’ Nebbiolo?) , which allows the grape’s best features to shine.
The fruit for this Nebbiolo was sourced from one of Australia’s oldest plantings of the variety and the grapes from those gnarly old vines were clearly rich in flavour, because the wine is full of Barolo-like charm and allure, but without the drying ‘walnut-skin’ tannins. It really gets at the heart of the grape, pouring a typically translucent, ruby-brick colour with aromas and flavours of peach fuzz, sweet cherry, black tea, orange peel and sweet plum. and its soft structure makes it a hedonistic, rather than masochistic, drinking experience. 13% alc. 120 days in 500 litre seasoned puncheons. Drink now-2030.
