Walter Scott 'Bois Moi' Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, Oregon, USA 2020
In ‘Alice in Wonderland’, the little bottle marked ‘Drink Me’, which made Alice shrink, tasted of “cherry tart, custard, pineapple, roast turkey, toffee and hot buttered toast”. Oddly enough, a couple of those flavours (pineapple and buttered toast), can be found in Walter Scott’s ‘Bois Moi’ (‘Drink Me’) Chardonnay, but thankfully we didn’t detect any turkey.
It’s very well-named, because while we were tasting it, we felt irked at the business of having to make an assessment. It was so delicious, we just wanted to set our pens down and drink it. It has colourful flavours, which you might think more befit a Lewis Carroll nonsense poem, but we found gunpowder, lime candy, toasted seeds, sliced peaches, crushed rocks, grapefruit and even a hint of borogrove. 13% alc. Drink now-2028.
Press reviews:
Decanter: “Plush aromas of ripe nectarine and yellow apples layered with tropical mango notes and a creamy vanilla intensity. The palate is more taut and linear, with rapier-like acidity and citrus peel freshness. Sophisticated and serious, an accomplished Chardonnay. 13% alc. Drink now-2030.” 94 points
The Wine Advocate: “The 2020 Chardonnay Bois - Moi opens with flinty tones that give way to plush yellow orchard fruits and wafts of beeswax. Medium-bodied, it has broad, honeyed fruits enlivened by bright acidity, and there's a touch of texture that lengthens the finish. Drink now-2028.” 94 points
