Seehof Sauvignon Blanc, Rheinhessen, Germany 2022
Maybe I’m imagining it, but I don’t think Sancerre tastes like Sancerre anymore. Maybe I have a false memory of how it used to be, which is possible, because I am still yet to taste a curry as good as the very first curry I had back in 1974. However, I’m sure Sancerre used to be flintier, grassier and crisper than it is today and that could be attributed to changes in winemaking styles, climate or my memory. I wasn’t expecting much when I tasted this German Sauvignon Blanc, so imagine my surprise when I took a sip and its wonderful flavours of greengages, nettles, shiso and blackcurrant leaf transported me straight back to the Sancerres of yesteryear, flinty, grassy, crisp and perfect with freshwater fish dishes, like truite aux amandes or quenelles de brochet. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2026.
