Prophet's Rock 'Aux Antipodes' White, Central Otago, New Zealand 2021
“A brilliant expression of place, but also a triumph of winemaking.” - The Wine Advocate, 95 points
Only 6 barrels of this beauty were produced, a volume that is along the lines of some of the rarest white Burgundies! It’s a Chardonnay of the very highest calibre and there is only one drawback: we only have 6 bottles. My tasting note is pretty useless, as it just says “OMG! Wow! Dynamite!”.
Press reviews:
The Wine Advocate: “This was released prior to the 2020 and was a small production from only 1.8 hectares and six barrels (back to 2018 volumes). In the glass, the 2021 Cuvée Aux Antipodes Blanc has a freshly crushed curry leaf character, and behind this, it is sumptuous and complex, layered with ripe stone fruit, flowers and jasmine tea. The wine in the mouth is undulating and perfumed, a brilliant expression of place, but also a triumph of winemaking. There’s almond, salted pear, a whiff of blond tobacco, apple blossom and brine. A beauty. It spent two winters in barrel, with no batonnage, all wild ferments (slow, but the malolactic conversion did eventually get there). Drink now-2036.” 95 points
JancisRobinson.com: “Mid golden straw. Still very tight, tart and youthful but with masses of interest locked away inside it. Good effort! Dense and dry on the end. Long. Drink now-2033.” 17 points
