Niepoort 'Redoma' Reserva Branco, Douro, Portugal 2022
Niepoort 'Redoma' Reserva Branco, Douro, Portugal 2022
“A smart wine with great potential.” - Decanter, 98 points
A broad and expansive white wine, structurally similar to a Grand Cru white Burgundy, in that it has great depth, richness and complexity (kudos to those 80 year-old vines), but is uniquely Portuguese in character, as it’s a field blend of 4 local varieties, Arinto, Rabigato, Codega de Larinho and Viosinho. There are toothsome flavours of lemon syllabub and panna cotta, with toasted hazelnut and vanilla hints from the oak, which introduces itself to the soft stone fruits with seamless ease, while grapefruit brings the cut and thrust. A beautifully balanced wine to enjoy with a good meal and worthy of being poured from a decanter. Only 11.5% alc. Drink now-2032.
Press reviews:
Decanter: “It was made (and the grapes were picked) to prioritise freshness, structure and minerality. A pioneer of Douro whites since the mid-nineties, Niepoort’s trademark precision and finesse shines, even in this century’s driest vintage. Sarah Ahmed: Toasty/charry oak and lime oil to nose and palate. Zesty, nutty with leesy complexity and hazelnutty oak. Showing lots of layers already. Nelson Guerreiro: Stone fruit, apple and pear nose with spice and a hint of vanilla. Medium bodied with a waxy side, balanced with a pleasant finish. Joanna Locke MW: Poised, with a strong seam of minerality and mouthwatering acidity. A smart wine with great potential. Drink now-2034.” 98 points
The Wine Advocate: “This is rich and expressive with a nuanced nose with spices and smoke, aromatic herbs, dry flowers and a Burgundian twist. The palate is very balanced and even shows some austerity, and it's chalky in the finish, very tasty and lively, the freshest of the 2022s. Douro whites need bottle age; this is approachable now but should age. Drink now-2030.” 95 points
