Jable de Tao 'La Diego', Lanzarote, Spain 2022
I absolutely love this volcanic white, but I cycled home after meeting the producer, Carmelo Peña, and left my tasting-notes in the basket of my Lime bike, so I’m having to write this from memory. The aromas evoked wet umbrellas, power chords and a prizefighter’s knuckles, while the palate tasted of step-ladders, slow motion replays and Alan Bennett’s birth certificate. Did I mention that I have a terrible memory? Thankfully, the experts below have written more useful descriptions. 12.5% alc. Only 2 barrels were made. Drink now-2028.
Press reviews:
Jamie Goode: “This is from vineyards around a volcano, and it’s varietal Diego. Vivid, salty and pithy with nice tart lemony fruit, and notes of orange peel. Great intensity here with mineral tension and some structure. Stony and mineral.” 95 points
The Wine Advocate: “The 2022 Paraje La Diego comes from the Juan Bello zone of Lanzarote where the Diego grapes are found. The wine has a reductive and flinty personality, less aromatic and more austere, with the effect of the new oak (in this first year, all barrels had to be new) very mild in this wine, but there's a certain patina. The palate is medium-bodied, austere but with a gentle twist. All whites go through malolactic, and in this first vintage, the new barrels also add to that character. Drink now-2029.” 93+ points
JancisRobinson.com: “Clean and pure on the nose. Creamy, round, unctuous and with hints of dry grass on the back palate. Powerful, intense, and rounded overall. It is a wine whose expression stands out most especially on the palate, with creaminess and a touch of chalkiness. Drink now-2028.” 17 points
