NEW! Furmint 'Aus dem Quartz', Michael Wenzel, Burgenland, Austria 2022
The Hungarian grape variety, Furmint, is having a bit of a renaissance in Austria at the moment and this is a great… oh, why am I bothering, you’re not reading this tasting-note, you’re staring at the beautiful label and who can blame you, it’s a real doozy! They say you eat first with your eyes and it applies to drinks too. Think of an Aperol Spritz or an Old Fashioned cocktail, they have you onside before you’ve even taken a sip and I was already leaning into this wine before popping the cork. It’s very mineral-driven, with a slightly grainy texture, and flavours of grapefruit, lime, white radish and pear, not wholly dissimilar to a top-notch Gruner Veltliner. Oh, for goodness sakes, put your eyes back in your head. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2028.
Press review:
JancisRobinson.com (previous vintage): “Smells of pear skin and green-apple skin. White pepper and pickled jalapeño. And sauerkraut. Popcorn. Chamomile. Sweet hay. It's complex, interesting, mineral. There was about 150 ml left in the bottle after the tasting, and after six days it became more and more spicy (cardamom) and nutty (green almonds) with the acidity developing a lime fragrance. Serious Furmint. (TC). 12.5% alc. Drink now-2029.” 17 points
