Emrich-Schönleber 'Lenz' Riesling Trocken, Nahe, Germany 2022
Emrich-Schönleber 'Lenz' Riesling Trocken, Nahe, Germany 2022
We tasted this alongside 99 other German Rieslings and it was our top pick of the day. It wasn’t the best wine, that honour went to Willi Schaefer’s auction bottle of Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett (which eventually went for a bid north of £100 a bottle), but this wine offered the best value of those we tasted and that’s what we do, we taste wines alongside their peers and decide which give the most bang for your bitcoin.
It’s a fabulous dry Riesling, from the brilliant Emrich Schöleber, but it’s not austere like some Trockens can be, it’s packed with juicy nectarine, clementine and lime flavours underpinned by an impression of wet slate that only German Rieslings seem able to convey. 11.5% alc. Drink now-2040.
Press review (previous vintage):
The Wine Advocate: “From reddish coloured, weathered slate soils, the 2021 Riesling Lenz is pure, fresh and mineral on the nose that reflects the quartzite elements of the terroir and gives some flinty spiciness. Lush and round on the palate, this is generous and salty-savoury Riesling with sensual and charming fruit and a long, savoury and saline finish. Fabulous even at this early stage. Drink now-2050.” 92 points
