Clos du Gravillas, 'L’Inattendu' Blanc, Minervois, Languedoc, France 2023
“This is exceptional… Knee-buckingly good.” - JancisRobinson.com, 17.5 points
This wine is singing at the top of its voice right now, with a very pure and natural tone. You can tell it hasn’t been auto-tuned with fancy equipment in the winery, there are no tricks, it’s just fabulous, pitch-perfect fruit, a blend of Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris (plus a dash of Macabeu), fermented and aged in barrel, to allow the fruit to unwind. It’s rich in orchard fruits, such as mirabelles, pears and nectarines, cloaked in a light layer of cream and a sprinkling of white petals. It’s like a really suave Cotes-du-Rhone Blanc, textured, yet fresh and dynamic. Try it, as Tamlyn Currin suggests, with Gruyère cheese. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2026.
Organic.
Press reviews:
JancisRobinson.com: “Clotted cream and vanilla, grilled mango and richness and then wave after wave of exquisitely precise, glittering, crystalline mica-mineral dust and sweet-orange acidity. This is exceptional. The combination of expansive richness, high-voltage but super-ripe acidity, smoky minerality and mosaic of flavours fills every corner of the mouth with thrilling vibration. Another Gravillas white wine that was knee-bucklingly good with Gruyère cheese. (TC). Drink now-2030.” 17.5 points
Decanter (previous vintage): “Grenaches Blanc and Gris, with some Macabeu, perform a delicate dance here, with inviting aromas that flit between white florals, wet rocks and a fine dusting of dried herbs. Firm, mineral and refined, with a light nutty note, this is a wine that's at once pure and powerful. The dry, hot 2022 vintage has not zapped this wine's consistent elegance. Fermented in 500-litre barrels and aged on lees, a little richness rounds out the finish. Drink now-2030.” 94 points
The Wine Advocate (previous vintage): “A hidden gem is the Minervois L'Inattendu Blanc, and it’s made from 80% Grenache Blanc and 20% Macabeu aged all in barrels. Possessing medium-bodied richness, integrated acidity, big minerality and clean, classic notes of white peach and crushed rocks, it will shine on the dinner table and keep for 2-3 years.” 93 points
