“Hard to find but well worth the hunt.” - Decanter, 97 points
The Bell Hill Chardonnay is a blend of the Shelf, Roadblock and Limeworks parcels. All the fruit was crushed before pressing, followed by 12 months in French oak (predominantly 1- to 3-year-old wood), 7 months in tank and then bottled on the 28th of October 2020 with a pH of 3.48, TA of 6.2 g/L, and alcohol of 13%. Close-planted vineyard (11,363 vines per hectare). Only 2,001 bottles were produced in 2019.
Press review:
Decanter: “Hard to find but well worth the hunt. A subtle wine, with dried lemon, tangerine, lime flowers and delicate bran biscuit notes, plus a distinctive mineral tang. It changes a lot in the glass; there are many layers to explore, with a sense of volume and flow anchored around a tight core of fine fruit. Very saline, with lively energy and vitality; deceptively long. Drink now-2045.“ 97 points
The Wine Advocate: “The 2019 Chardonnay leads with nuts, ripe peach, pineapple, shaved fennel and apricot kernel. The wine is rich and opulent in the mouth, with a sort of attractive acidity that balances the ripe fruit and opens the way for the phenolics profile through the finish. This is a highly prized wine in New Zealand and a hard one to get hold of. There's an attractive, mineral, quinine freshness to this wine that I like very much. Drink now-2034.” 94 points
