Mullineux Straw Wine, Swartland, South Africa 2013 (37.5cl) half bottle
"This might turn out to their best straw wine to date. As for the price...just how many bottles of Yquem could you buy for the equivalent. The cork?" - The Wine Advocate, 96 points
One of the great sweet wine treasures of the world, this is a stunning Chenin Blanc straw wine that contains some botrytised fruit and if you don't know what that means, it translates roughly as scrumdiddlyumptious. On the dessert wine scale it sits somewhere between a light Sauternes and a rich Tokaji and if you don't know what that means, it translates roughly as scrumptious! It's an epiphany of apricots (ooooh!) a maelstrom of marmalades (oooooooh!) and a cornucopia of confectioneries (oooooooh!). Indulgently rich, yet rivetingly acidulated, it's the perfect way to round off a meal with cheese or pud. 9.5% alc. 37.5cl. Drink now-2040.
Press review:
The Wine Advocate: “For the very first time, Chris Mullineux told me that the 2013 Straw Wine contained some botrytis. It has a gorgeous, very pure bouquet with honey, mandarin, orange peel and a touch of peach that is incredibly detailed. The palate is viscous, beautifully balanced and perhaps the purest that I have tasted since their debut in 2008. Layers of honeyed fruit infused with orange zest and mandarin, razor-sharp definition on the finish that has electricity flowing through it. Stylistically equidistant between a fine Sauternes and Tokaji, this might turn out to their best straw wine to date. As for the price...just how many bottles of Yquem could you buy for the equivalent. The cork? Drink now-2040.” 96 points
Wine Enthusiast: "Made from 100% air dried Chenin Blanc, this is a remarkably well-balanced, knock-your-socks-off effort, loaded with lush, seductive notes of honey-drizzled apricot, peach preserves, baked apple, orange oil and honeycomb. It's full and unctuous, but not flabby, with beautiful lifting acidity that keeps the palate fresh. The long, sticky finish boasts a gorgeous honeyed spice flavor. It's delicious now, but it's also a wine that will easily age another decade or more." 95 points
Platter Guide: "Star amongst the Cape’s vin de paille-style dessert wines. Naturally older-barrel-fermented 2013 decadently sweet & viscous, threaded with chenin’s pervasive & piquant freshness. Lingering nougat, honey & dried fruit flavours drawn to long & tangy conclusion." 5 Stars *****
