Soumah of the Yarra Valley 'Hexham Vineyard' Pinot Noir, Australia 2021
To use a bowling analogy, this wine feels more like a delivery from Glenn McGrath than Shane Warne, as it has good line and length, but maybe lacks the flare and unpredictability of a Shane Warne leg-break. There’s nothing wrong with that (as Glenn McGrath’s 563 wickets will testify), and for a very fair price it delivers delicious Pinot Noir flavours that are dusted with some fine grace notes from the French oak barrels. So, seek within this medium-pale red and you will find succulent cherry, strawberry and rosehip mingling with vanilla and toasted chestnuts. The Yarra Valley is a cool climate region and this wine evokes, without imitating, red Burgundy, which isn’t totally surprising as they use a Pinot Noir clone from the Cotes de Beaune. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2025.
Press review:
Decanter: “Part of the single-vineyard series, this has admirable concentration and depth with more dark (black cherry and mulberry) rather than red fruits, as well as a hint of dandelion and burdock. There's a sheen of toasty vanilla oak spice from time in new wood and the chalky tannins provide a solid structure. Drink 2023-2030.” 92 points.
