"Roca Madre is an incredible, world class red." - Tim Atkin MW, 98 points and 'Red Wine of the Year'
"I was blown away by the juicy and hedonistic 2018 Roca Madre." - The Wine Advocate, 96 points
We’re busy tasting our own writing-note. Hic.
Tim Atkin MW: "Well, well, well. Who would have anticipated this? My best Chilean red wine of the year is a Malbec - and not just any Malbec. Roca Madre is an incredible, world class red from the volcanic soils of Rio Hurtado vineyard, located at 1,600 metres in the remote Limari Andes. Racy, tangy, grippy and intensely perfumed, it's an incredible expression of the variety, with violet, plum and black cherry concentration, fine-grained tannins and a pithy, energetic, mineral-etched core. 14.5% alc." 98 points and 'Red Wine of the Year'
The Wine Advocate: "I was blown away by the juicy and hedonistic 2018 Roca Madre, a very complete vintage for this unique wine produced with grapes from young vines in the Valle Hurtado of Limarí at 1,600 metres in altitude. It's varietal, floral, perfumed and intoxicating, very showy and with a seamless, round and lush palate with pristine flavours and nicely integrated oak after spending 21 months in fourth use French barriques. There is a jump in quality in this wine with this vintage, helped by the very good vintage. Drink now-2029." 96 points
This wine was produced exclusively with Malbec grapes from the Río Hurtado vineyard, which is in the Limarí Valley in the Andes Mountains, just 20 miles from Argentina. At an altitude of 1,600 metres above sea level, this mountain vineyard is one of the three highest in Chile. The vineyard is on an east-facing slope and only receives sunshine in the mornings and early afternoons. There is therefore great thermal amplitude (the difference between daytime and night-time temperatures can exceed 20ºC). In winter the vineyard can be completely covered with snow while rain is falling lower down in the valley. This is a very special soil, because the volcanic rock decomposed here and slowly formed a thin layer of soil. It is very fractured and this enables the roots to venture down and explore the whole geological profile. This lends the wines quality, elegance, complexity and, above all, an unrivalled typicity.
