Ridge Vineyards 'Lytton Springs', Sonoma, California 2019
As it comes from one of California’s most iconic wine estates, with a very loyal following, there isn’t much of this single vineyard Zinfandel to go around, so grab it while you can (we did!). It is a four-grape blend of Zinfandel (73%), Petite Syrah (16%), Carignan (9%), and Mourvedre (2%) aged for 14 months in American oak (20% new) and, unlike most Californian Zinfandel, which is massively proportioned with jammy - even porty - flavours, Lytton Springs is more structured, refined and complex and destined for a long life. Stick it away and forget about it until 2026 and drink until 2040 at least.
Press review:
The Wine Advocate: “The 2019 Lytton Springs is another embryonic wine in this range. Readers will have to be patient. Time in the glass brings out an exotic melange of rose petal, blood orange, pomegranate and star anise, all wrapped together by plush, silky tannins. There is a lot of wine here. Healthy dollops of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Mataro round out the blend, but the Zinfandel is pretty expressive in the leading role.. Drink 2027-2049.“ 95 points
Jancis Robinson MW: “Richer than the Geyserville with more texture. Dry finish and lots of personality and grunt. There's a real structure to this. Very long. Drink 2024-2036” 17+ points
