Rapsani 'Old Vines', Dougos, Thessaly, Greece 2019

£30.95

Sourced from organically-farmed vineyards planted in 1952 on the foothills of Mount Olympus, this Rapsani (the name of the village) is a blend of Xinomavro (70%), Krasato (25%) and Stavroto (5%) and it’s just wonderful! The colour is translucent, with a brick-red core leading to a garnet rim, looking very similar to a Barolo and it certainly has some echoes of Nebbiolo. Plum, tomato leaf, sweet cherry and a little new oak emerge from the glass and the palate is lithe and agile, showing a little attractive senescence [yes, getting old can be attractive! - he says defensively] with notes of leather and forest floor. A wine to enjoy from a wide-bowled glass with a good meal, maybe something dusted with herbs and olives. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2036.

Press review:

JancisRobinson.com: “Translucent garnet with bricky rim. Like the straight Rapsani 2020 in character but more intense, even more classic Rapsani character, tangy notes of wild red fruits all tangled up with a suggestion of leather and, again, dried tomato and some wild herbs. That intensity on the palate, too, even though the fruit is vibrant rather than rich. The tannins are very dry and very fine, the acidity mouth-watering. Just a touch of oak in evidence. Quite challenging if you are not familiar with Rapsani (or Xinomavro) but a great example of this appellation. Needs time. Really persistent. A classic. (JH). Drink 2026-2034.” 17 points
