NEW! Piedra Fluida 'Ojitos', Tenerife, Spain 2020
If you mention Tenerife to a lot of people, it conjures up images of sunburnt Brits eating fish and chips and hen nights carrying oddly-shaped inflatables, but if you mention Tenerife to a wine-lover, it conjures up images of volcanic soils, windswept vineyards and indigenous grape varieties. Piedra Fluida's 'Ojitos' 2020 is made from Listan Negro grapes, grown in Santa Ursula on the north side of the island (far away from the raucous south) and it's quite a deep-coloured wine by Tenerife standards, showing lots of dark cherry, juicy blackcurrant and black pepper with a graphite quality that gives the wine a cool, mineral backbone. Quite a serious wine with many years of pleasure ahead. 12.5% alc. Drink now-2036.
Press reviews:
Jamie Goode: “This is a single vineyard Listan Negro from a plot at 600 metres, steeply sloped. Smoky, mineral nose with fine spices and gravelly detail. Brooding palate with a charcoal edge to the cherry fruit. Linear and direct, and really fine.” 95 points
JancisRobinson.com: “100% Listán Negro. Single vineyard from Finca Vidal at 650 m elevation in the county of Santa Úrsula on Tenerife. 80-year-old bush vines. Organic viticulture. Alcoholic fermentation in open oak barrels, then aged in oak barrels of 500 litres for 8 months. Notes of dried flowers, cherry and subtle toast. Delicate on the palate with characteristic notes of graphite. Well balanced and fluid. Lots of red cherry at the end of the palate and great overall freshness. (FC) Drink now-2025 [we couldn't agree less with this drinking window!].” 16 points
