PerSe 'Inseparable' Malbec, Gualtallary, Uco Valley, Argentina 2021
“High-altitude Malbec from Gualtallary, when handled sensitively by brilliant winemakers like Edgardo Del Popolo and David Bonomi of PerSe, stands shoulder to shoulder with the First Growths of Bordeaux.” - Vin Cognito (yes, we said that, and we stand by it!)
I want to say that this Malbec is ‘serious’, which it is, but it’s not the right word, because it’s incompatible with it also being ‘joyful’, which it is too. Seriously joyful makes sense, but joyfully serious doesn’t. It’s the structure that’s serious, but it’s the fruit that is joyful, like a pantomime at the National Theatre or the funny item at the end of the news. Glossy black fruits and cedar mingle with a delicate floral top note, which distinguishes a great Malbec from the proliferation of oaky soups out there.
We’re going to say it for the umpteenth time, so that it sticks and we get early-adopter kudos: high-altitude Malbec from Gualtallary, when handled sensitively by brilliant winemakers like Edgardo Del Popolo and David Bonomi of PerSe, stands shoulder to shoulder with the First Growths of Bordeaux. 14% alc. Drink now-2035.
Press reviews:
Vinous: “The 2021 Malbec ‘Inseparable’, from El Monasterio in Gualtallary, Uco Valley, spent a winter in concrete vats. Purple in colour. The enticing primary nose presents crushed plum, cherry, violets and faint lavender undertones. The tea-like palate has a juicy, refreshing, taut flow that delivers alluring fruity and floral flavours before the lengthy finish. The 2021 is an oxymoron in a glass: a delicate, nuanced, but raw, high-altitude wine. Drink now-2040.“ 95 points
Decanter: “Without seeing any oak, this Malbec retains incredible fruit purity vividly outlined by a fragrant, lifted layer of violets, cherry leaf and wild rocket. The palate is framed by beautiful mineral tannins which hold the plum, red cherry and red apple fruit with ease. There's also a zesty juiciness throughout, giving the wine lively energy and drive. Finishes with an earthy touch of wet stone and graphite. Drink now-2032.” 94 points
