“Leave millionaires to fight over their Musigny and let wine lovers enjoy their Morgon.” - Neal Martin
This is a gleeful and noteworthy expression of Gamay, which comes from 40 year-old vines planted in deep granite soils in the ‘Les Charmes’ climat, a single plateau within the Morgon commune. The grapes are fermented in whole bunches (i.e. they are not destemmed) and aged in old oak barrels.
A wonderfully heady perfume of cherries billows from the glass along with strawberry crush, cassis, fresh earth and notes of wild pansies and granite dust. There’s an insouciance to it, which indicates a winemaker who is completely comfortable in his skin and you can taste the ‘less-is-more’ approach in the wine’s subtly complex aromas and flavours. The palate has wonderful intensity, energy and length and is full of thirst-quenchingly fresh fruit reminiscent of a punnet full of freshly picked berries, while the tannins are grainy and just perceptible and weave into the wine’s mellifluous texture. It’s the kind of wine that not only feels alive but imbues your palate with wild tangy joy. Organic and biodynamic. 13% alc. Drink now-2030.
