Hundred Suns 'Old Eight Cut' Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2022

£38.00

"Overdelivers for its modest price." - The Wine Advocate

Your eyes are probably flicking at the disconnect between the quote above and the advertised bottle price, which is fair enough, because most wine-drinkers wouldn't consider £38.00 a "modest" price, but within the context of Oregon Pinot Noir, it's practically 'entry level'. That's why you won't see too many Oregon wines on our website, because one of our guiding principles is to ask whether you can find the same quality (or better) for less money elsewhere and with Oregon (and, indeed, US wines in general), you often can. So, when we tasted this wine, we were expecting it to be typically somewhat overpriced, but were pleasantly surprised to find that the quality was entirely commensurate with the price tag. Maybe even a little better. It's a beautifully layered Pinot Noir, with notes of cherry juice, raspberry, orange peel, mint, juniper and tilled soil, giving it a forest-like quality that asks for a loin of venison or roast partridge. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2034.

Press reviews:

Decanter: “Fermented with 20% whole-cluster, this Pinot Noir gives so much depth and minerality, all at around $38. Approachable and lively now but still serious enough to lay down, aromatics of wild mint, spicy blood orange zest and a serious saline mineral streak. The palate is electric; red fruits and spice dance across a streak of saline minerality. Spicy red plum skin, white pepper and crushed ripe raspberries all play well with one another, finishing with herbaceous raspberry leaf and sea salt.” 94 points

The Wine Advocate: “The 2022 Pinot Noir Old Eight Cut overdelivers for its modest price. It marries pomegranate and rhubarb with savoury nuances of tobacco, mushrooms, dried earth and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with dark red, spicy fruit. It has a fine, dusty texture, mouthwatering acidity and a long, flavourful finish. Drink now-2034.” 92 points
