NEW! Blaufrankisch 'Aus dem Kalk', Michael Wenzel, Burgenland, Austria 2022
I’m not one to fall for the power of suggestion, so I didn’t allow the attractive label to influence my tasting impressions. It’s a hauntingly beautiful wine, reminiscent of a full moon over the ocean, its light gleaming over glossy, dark, mysterious fruit.
When Blaufrankisch is grown on limestone soil, as it is here, it seems to enrich the grapes with glistening black cherry and cassis flavours that flow like satin ribbons across the palate, both rich and fluid at the same time. 13% alc. Drink now-2032.
Press review:
JancisRobinson.com: “Deep purplish crimson. Dark-fruited, rich and spicy. Gorgeously rich but fresh aroma with deep fruit, stony minerality and dusty pepper. Juicy, high acidity, firm but almost silky texture. Tannins are firm yet very fine. Masses of tension with a lovely dry finish. Precise and long with pure fruit. Good Value (JH). Drink now-2035.” 17.5 points
Jamie Goode: “Lovely aromatics with perfumed floral cherries, raspberries. The palate has amazing texture and a nice acid line. Precise with fine acidity. It’s stony and bright but has lovely weight in the mouth.” 96 points
